In 1924, IBM begins a Boca Raton plant, which was part of the General Systems Division. This division created the first affordable computer and business systems. In time, the plant is converted into a manufacturing plant and research center. The staff is composed of scientists, engineers, computer scientists, secretaries, shipping clerks, and technicians. The Boca Raton facility’s employment reached a peak of 10,000 people in 1985. Since then, it has remained at 1,500.
